Dans une interview inédite présente sur l’un des DVD du coffret Released ! The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998, sorti fin octobre 2013, Bruce Springsteen parle longuement de sa participation aux tournées d’Amnesty International en 1988 et 1998.
En répondant positivement à l’appel de son ami Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen avoue ne pas avoir pris la pleine mesure de ce dans quoi il s’engageait. Citation en VO (sorry pour ceusses qui n’entravent pas l’engliche !) :
« There was an enormous amount of studying and trying to be informed about every country that we landed in and also we had to make parallels to things that were very imperfect in the United States.
The news conferences, if I’d have known I would have to do I might not have done the tour because they were the most harrowing parts of the entire six weeks. We came down and we sat at a table and we were grilled by the nation’s press in each country that we went in to, and in some places it got very intense.
I remember when we were done it was like, ‘That was great, I hope I never have to do that again’… I did more studying than I ever thought I would have to do once I picked the guitar up, but it had a great impact on all of us. »

Bruce Springsteen explique aussi s’être ouvert au monde et à ses musiques diverses au cours de la tournée de 1988, puisqu’à chaque « étape », l’affiche s’enrichissait avec des artistes locaux. A l’époque, explique-t-il, le E Street Band était encore un groupe « provincial » qui n’avait fait que quelques rares tournées en Europe. Il raconte aussi s’être retrouvé en Afrique devant un public presque exclusivement noir. Clarence Clemons lui avait dit à cette occasion : « maintenant, tu sais l’impression que ça fait. »
Sur un plan plus anecdotique, Bruce Springsteen relate aussi son trouble lors du concert Amnesty à Bercy en 1998. Citation encore en VO :
« They said, ‘We’d like you to go on after Led Zeppelin!’ (NDLR : en fait Jimmy Page et Robert Plant) I said, ‘I’m playing by myself. I don’t think I wanna go on right after Led Zeppelin. How about I go on before Led Zeppelin?’
So we gave the guitar to one of the road guys… and I went out and he came and he handed it to me and I went to the mic and it was completely out of tune, like, horrendously, unbelievably, horrifically, embarrassingly, you’re-finished-go-home out of tune.
There was an enormous commotion. I handed it back and I think I sat down on the stage for a while. The difficulty was it was a French audience, so I had nothing to say. Peter Gabriel comes out, who speaks French pretty well, and launches into obviously some excuse for me; what that was I don’t know, and I’m sitting on a speaker watching him.
The guitar comes back, it’s still pretty badly in shape, but I manage to get it somewhat in tune and if you ever see all the footage… it was hilarious. »

Dans ce coffret très riche, on retrouve aussi trois titres (déjà parus en DVD) de Bruce Springsteen en solo lors de la tournée The Struggle Continues de 1998 : No Surrender, Born In The USA, Working On the Highway.
Les « complétistes » achèteront en plus les deux double CD Released ! The Human Rights Concerts consacrés l’un à la tournée 1988, l’autre à la la tournée 1998. On y trouve les mêmes titres que sur les DVD, avec de copieux livrets…
